Goodbye, Harry...

A lot of you have asked what I thought of the last Harry Potter movie, but let's be honest, I was going to make this post even if nobody had. I will try my best to not be really angsty and relatively brisk about this. The movie itself, was okay. I loved how they did some of the scenes, namely Hermione as Bellatrix and the kiss (even though it wasn't like in the book), but there were also scenes I thought could have been handled better. Here I'm referring to the final Harry/Voldemort battle and the epilogue. Then again, the epilogue was not my favorite in the book either, so I was expecting it to be sort of awkward. I think there is a lot to be said for how much the acting of the kids (um...maybe not Bonnie Wright) has improved, I mean, did you see Matthew Lewis?! That was effing phenomenal! Not to mention that boy has grown up spectacularly. However, as usual, I think it was the older actors that really took the cake here. Most obviously: Julie Walters, Helen McCrory, Helena Bonham Carter, and Alan Rickman (like, holy crap, he was good). But, I also loved Maggie Smith in this one. The woman is 76, battling breast cancer, going through intense chemo, and still did some of the most badass battling I have ever seen. She could have taken a break, but she wanted to do it for the fans who've stuck with the movies. I think impressed isn't quite a strong enough word for what I am. Overall, I did like it a lot.

Emotionally, I've basically been a wreck. I spent probably half of the movie in tears to the point where both friends on either side of me felt the need to offer tissues. And then the day after, I spent the morning in a completely listless haze alternating between reading Half-Blood Prince and not knowing what to do with myself. I read my copy of Dear Mr. Potter and spent most of that time crying, because some of those letters are exactly what I would have said. I realize these books will always be here, but not having any more to look forward to in this series and possibly in this world just kills me.*

Finally, though I know only a small handful of people will see it here, I want to thank J.K. Rowling and everything she's done for me. Spending over half my life and growing up in Harry's world has meant more to me than I can begin to say. Where she put her words, so will I. By the increasingly-wearing pages of my original set of Harry Potter books, I will always silently express my unending gratitude. Honestly, "thank you" just doesn't seem like strong enough of a sentiment, but it's all I can say. Thank you, thank you, thank you. For everything.**

Mischief Managed

*I'm not sure yet about how much new material Pottermore is going to introduce, so I'm not getting my hopes up.
**Dammit, I promised myself I wouldn't cry while writing this, but somehow I've managed to fail.

  1. Hear, hear. Awesome post and amazing to hear your point of view. I was absolutely satisfied with ending, they did put great effort (perhaps I would change few details but still, it's not that important). Even if Harry series have come to an end, we'll still have books to read and movies to watch it over and over.

  2. from the point of view of a girl who only read the first book, the last movie did a good job at wrapping everything up, although some of it was confusing because it didn't explain certain things, like when Mrs. Malfoy told voldemort Harry was dead and said "draco, is he alive?" very confusing. I had to have it all explained to me by my sister in law who had read them. I am thinking I should read the books now, so I can better piece everything together.

  3. Your love of "Harry Potter" is fascinating to me. This is what it was like for me when "Friends," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and "24" ended. I could not stop crying during the finales.

  4. i went to see the movie with my friends the night it came out, and i thought it was amazing! i never read the entire series (just the first book, in 5th grade haha), so i can't do much when it comes to comparing the books with the movies. however, my friend said that 99% of the movie was blown out of proportion from artistic interpretation. not sure if that's a bad thing.

regardless, i really liked the movie. i think your harry potter obsession is awesome!!
