Final Four

I cannot figure out where the time's been going. I did a little "what have I done lately that I can post on the blog?" mental excursion and came up with "Aha! March Madness!" Then I actually looked it up and oh boy, that was three weeks ago. Well, I hope you'll bear with me anyway. I will admit that not having cable means not following basketball as closely as I'd like, but I'm still a staunch UNC fan. Once they were out of the tournament, I started doing what any good UNC fan would do and rooting for any team playing Duke. That...didn't go well.
I happen to work right near where the major Final Four activities were occurring and this beautiful thing went up about a week before the games.
To appreciate the size of this Marriott, you unfortunately kind of had to be there, but check out the teeny tiny cars in the parking lot! I was so enamored with this majestic site that it almost made me forget about my poor, destroyed bracket.
As part of the Final Four festivities they have a little music festival, where this cool Ferris wheel was housed. We didn't get a chance to go on it, but it was a pretty sight all the same.
And last, but almost certainly best, was the music itself. This brilliant light show is courtesy of Imagine Dragons, who put on an amazing show, despite that it was cold, rainy, and windy the evening of the concert. I came home with muddy boots and the kind of clarity that only comes from commiserating with strangers at concerts and went to bed so content.....until Wisconsin broke my heart a few short days later.

Bringing Sexy Back!!

Do you know what the best news I've thus far gotten in 2013 is?

THIS.

I remember when FutureSex/LoveSounds was maybe in the works (waaayyy back freshman year of high school), I was skeptical, because, surely JT could not put out anything solo that was better than *NYSNC, y'know? And then, holy shit, did he deliver. I feel giddy about whatever new stuff might be coming in a very girlish way.....don't judge me. Also, you're welcome if I was how you found out.

Dark Blue

I don't know if other people do this or if it's just another odd quirk of mine, but I tend to celebrate anniversaries for unconventional events. I do it for a number of things, but by far my favorite one is my Dark Blue-versary.

Today marks seven years since the first time I heard "Dark Blue" by Jack's Mannequin.

I made this post a while back about how I first heard the song, but it's truly meant so much more than just some words I wrote. It's really crazy how one simple song has become the ultimate emotional stabilizer for me. I mean, considering how horrible my music-ADD is, I really never would've dreamed that I would've had a favorite song that lasted for 7 years. (Is this starting to sound creepily like a relationship yet?)

I want to share, because this song actually changed my life. Also, the video concept is really cool and fun. Check it out. Well, I'm off to go put this on repeat and celebrate the best seven years of my life!

Strawberry Swing

Just watch this video. Someone showed it to me yesterday, and holy crap. It's so well-done, and the angle-changing is perfect and I have probably watched it a hundred times already. Happy Sunday!

The Colourist

Last night, I went to a show with the roomie, Loni, and some other friends. I was really excited for the headliners, Grouplove, actually, because they'd come highly recommended and they're playing Coachella this year, and I really really like their album.

But, as fate would have it, I ended up liking the opening band way more! Let me introduce you to:

One of the people in our group is good friends with the band, so we got to meet them all and I am seriously in love with their drummer, Maya. She was adorable and fashionable and I really wish I had a picture of the sweater she was wearing because it was Fabulous. Actually, I wish I had pictures at all, but since I am a giant failure, I forgot my camera. Loni and I liked them so much, we ended up buying a CD which immediately earned a spot in my CD changer. You can check 'em out here!

Grouplove was really good too, but I mean, these guys just stole the show (and my heart) with their vocals, energy, and complete and total cuteness on stage.

Also, now I really want to be the cool girl in a rock 'n' roll band.
They take bio majors, right?

We Can Live Like This

Remember how I was really excited way back when that I was really excited about this Jack's Mannequin concert. Well, that was a month ago, and because I'm a total blogging failure, I hadn't even put those pictures on my computer until today. The drive was long, made better by good companions and the cast of Glee, but oh-so-worth it. I'm usually not a big fan of opening bands, but I'm just going to be honest, I think I've liked the openers at every Jack's show I've seen, and this was no different. They were Lady Danville, Steel Train (whom you might know if you know the band 'fun.', and Live Oak Revue (whom I recommended in the last post). But then Andrew came on, and as usual, he had so much infectious energy. He played basically all of Everything In Transit, which is probably my favorite album to date, not just of theirs. He played some new stuff too, which was just brilliant, and I am SO EXCITED for the album to come out. I was in the first row for most of it, but it was really squashed tight. Anyway, I hope I haven't rambled too much, but, here! Have some fun pictures!

And a new song that's just beautiful: "Restless Dream"

By the time I got home, at 3 am, I could do nothing but change, crash into bed, and sway off to sleep with the most beautiful melodies swimming through my dreams.

Sins of My Youth

Today is kind of an exciting day, because after work, I will be heading to the ever-magnificent San Diego County Fair!

via weheartit

One of the awesome things about the SD County Fair is that they have this huge free summer concert series. They get some pretty big names. This year, Switchfoot played, and last year, they had Weezer come and I am through the roof, because tonight I'm going to see Neon Trees. I sampled them for this Tuesday Tunes earlier, and most of you have probably heard "Animal" on the radio or on Glee, but even with just the one album out I really like their music. A lot.

And let's be honest, who doesn't like the fair? I'm going to eat fried crap and cotton candy like there's no tomorrow and bask in the playful freedom of whirling rides and flashing lights and tacky carnival music all evening. Hoo-ray!

Dear Jack

You guys know my Holy Trinity by now, right? Well, I don't know how I've held out so long, but I'm finally going to introduce you all to its third member. This post is going to be long and emotional.

In 2002, when I was avidly into Indian music and not so up to date on what was going on in the American music scene, a family friend, who I happened to have an enormous crush on, was very into punk rock. Once, at his house, he made me listen to this amazing song: "I Woke Up In A Car" by Something Corporate. I remember trying to familiarize myself with some of their other stuff, so I'd have more stuff to talk about with this boy, and really just loving the whole sound of the music. Then I had a pretty lengthy rap phase through eighth grade, and sort of lost touch.

Freshman year of high school, someone made me listen to "She Paints Me Blue" after a debate tournament, when I hadn't even known they had a new album out. The piano on the song was beautiful. It was a much more melodic, less angsty sound that made my heart beat faster every time I heard it. I heard it at a time I was head over heels for a boy that had just moved away and so the sense of loss in the song really resounded with me. I found another favorite that really moved me, "Konstantine," and in those days, I couldn't sleep without the lull of those two songs.

Then, a few months later, everything changed. On a night after I'd had a particularly terrible fight with my parents, I saw a pretty little lyric on a friend's AIM away message: "Dark blue, dark blue, have you ever been alone in a crowded room?" I Googled the song, and listened to it for the first time way past midnight on February 12th. I was pretty sure I had rediscovered God. This song changed my life. To this day, I listen to it every day, more than once sometimes. It's the song that's my every-mood song; if I'm happy it makes me happier. If I'm upset, it consoles me. If I'm feeling frustration, the melody brings tears to relieve it. I couldn't say enough about this song to make you understand what it's meant to me.

I soon found that the band that sung it, Jack's Mannequin, had been started by the guy from Something Corporate, one Andrew McMahon. Needless to say, when I started driving, these CDs were the first in my car. Every song on Everything In Transit struck something in me. I found out he'd been diagnosed with leukemia, but I didn't know much about it until 2008, when Jack's Mannequin put out their second record, The Glass Passenger. I'd never heard cancer described quite like in "Caves." I could hear the pain of distance from great friends (which I was feeling since I'd just moved to San Diego for school) sung boldly in "Hammers and Strings (A Lullaby)" and the most breathtaking arrangement I'd ever heard on "Swim."

Then, I saw him live for the first time. At one point, sometime after Dark Blue, I just stopped dancing, stopped singing along, and started crying. The tears just wouldn't stop, and all I could do was smile so big because I was finally, finally seeing this talented powerhouse in concert. I cried all the way to the end of the show and probably a little more after that, and I think by the end, my friend was a little worried, haha. Later, I saw the documentary, Dear Jack he made about his time in treatment. "Saw" might be the wrong word, really, because I was bleary-eyed and sobbing almost the whole time.

Andrew McMahon inspires me. His music has put so much life in my world and when Jack's Mannequin announced their latest tour, I couldn't not go. So, for this, you will find me driving three hours up to Ventura in June to see him play...again.

Weekend Update

You guys, I am so happy with the responses to the Tuesday Tunes feature! It took me a couple days, but all your responses were so good! And aside from "Dog Days Are Over" and "You and I," I basically hadn't heard any of them! So, keep that up, for sure.

This is what you guys have turned me into. That kid with 7 YouTube tabs open.

Last night, I got to see Hellogoodbye in concert! Seriously, they were one of my favorite bands somewhere around freshman year of high school, so there was that strange nostalgia surrounding the whole thing. But the guys in the band were so adorable and cracked jokes, played with bubbles, and made lame puns the whole time, so by the end I was in love all over again. So, I'm working up to a real post, but as I mentioned before, this is very quickly turning into the week from hell, so excuse the sort-of-filler posts.

I Will Build A Path To You

Top: Target; Belt: Charlotte Russe; Skirt: Banana Republic; Tights: ?

All this conferencing and I barely managed to document what I wore, you guys! I just realized that I looked super-cute (at least, I hope I did) all of last weekend, and only have a few pictures of my clothes. Boo. Well, in any case, here's one of them from pre-Day One.

Update: Guitar officially acquired! Send in your websites that allow my free learning. Keep in mind, I know nothing about guitars and these "lessons" should probably start from "How Do I Tune This Thing?" That being said, I'm not totally new to music (i.e. chords and keys) so we won't have to start THAT far back.

The Mornings

They say that often, during tough times, the hardest thing you will have to do is get out of bed. In the last few weeks, I am finding this increasingly true. Not just figuratively, but literally. After getting up, everything seems easier to do. With class at 7:30 am every single day, I've lost the wake-up time in the mornings that I so cherish. Some of my favorite morning pastimes have been spending an hour or two sipping coffee, catching up on my Google reader, making my lunch, and dressing myself well. Having that ripped away from me because I am physically incapable of waking up at 5 am has taken a significant toll on my morning joy. Enough that I think I might start making the 40 minute walk to campus instead of taking the bus because I can use that morning time to sip my coffee and enjoy the morning at least.

In other news, I am borrowing a guitar from my old apartmate with the full intent to learn. So, look for progress on that front! I hope I can stay motivated enough to actually follow through with this!

Borrowed: Music Monday!

Instead of doing my usual Lust List Monday feature, I'm changing it up today and borrowing a feature from one of my favorite blogs, SWEATshirtDRESSshirt; Music Monday rules!

1. "Coppertone" - Hellogoodbye
Seriously, this song is beautiful. The line from the picture is in it, and it's just delivered so well that when I'm not expecting it, it gives me chills.
2. "If It's Love" - Train
I'm kind of a sucker for Train. "Drops of Jupiter" is one of my all-time favorites, and a song of my childhood, so I can't help but be totally moved by every song they make.
3. "Pass Out" - Tinie Tempah
I have a deep respect for rap and some hip-hop. There is a very long and convoluted method to that madness that I won't bore you with. Plus, he's British. Check the accent.
4. "Dress & Tie" - Charlene Kaye ft. Darren Criss
Pretty, pretty, pretty. Also, don't judge me; I couldn't not include something of his. But, really, listen to it, it's quite good. Apparently, if you're a fan of Chuck, there's a pretty serious fan campaign going to have it play at Chuck and Sarah's wedding.
5. "Hear You Me" - Jimmy Eat World
Old school, but I'm seeing them again in May, and so I've been revisiting. This song always gets me; the almost haunting melody and the emotion behind the words. When I saw them on New Years, this song (no matter that I've heard it a million times) made me cry.

Happy Monday!

No Tracks

On Thursday, I got to see a lovely little showcase at my school by various acapella groups. I love singing and dancing, and acapella just has this wonderful charm surrounding it that's really fun and awe-inspiring to watch. Of the four amazing groups that performed, the ones that really stood out were the Tritones. Now, they've got a seriously good reputation, and some legitimate credit (they sang back up for Taylor Swift at the 2010 ACM Awards!*) so seeing them live was a real treat.
That has kind of sent me on an acapella group trip. I might have watched every Yale Whiffenpoofs video ever to exist and it's entirely possible that I would be able to recognize any member of USC's SoCal VoCals, Princeton's TigerTones, and BYU's Vocal Point if I were ever to see them. Creepy, I know, but somehow I just can't get enough of not having back-up tracks! It has made me wonder if with any practice, I might be able to audition for one in the fall. I'm sure it has to do a lot with Glee, but I suddenly have crazy musical ambitions, haha.

Some Recommendations:
Lady Marmalade/Ain't No Other Man - SoCal VoCals
Down By The Salley Gardens - The Whiffenpoofs
Happy Ending - BYU Noteworthy

*You can see them around 4:00 of the video.

Weekend Playlist

Over the weekend, I had music on the mind. Old, new, pop, acoustic, all sorts that I listened to and practiced singing along with. That is something I want to try and do more. I love to sing, and since my somewhat short-lived choir days, I want to do it more again. Also, somehow I have managed to forget how to sight-sing and that kind of ticks me off. Nothing like forgetting something you could once do to make you feel like a loser, right? Anyway, my weekend recommendations (with videos for the top 3):

1. "Fader" - The Temper Trap

2. "Location" - Freelance Whales

3. "Dress and Tie" - Charlene Kaye ft. Darren Criss

4. "White Lies" - My Dear Disco
5. "Gypsy" - Shakira
6. "Home" - Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
7. "Stop" - Jimmy Eat World
8. "Baby, It's Cold Outside" - Margaret Whiting and Johnny Mercer

Sort of an odd mix, I realize, but still very much awesome. Maybe one of them will make your Mondays a little bit better! :)

We Are All Born Superstars

I am a great big ball of excitement and scurrying around today! We leave on this trip tonight, so I have about a million things to do, but the most important thing is that Lady Gaga's new single "Born This Way" was just released today!! I even gave in and bought it from iTunes (despite their evil DRM policies). The song's all about being yourself and staying true under pressure. Now, I've met a lot of people who dislike her music, and I'm not going to try and convince anyone otherwise, but this is why I like her. She is new, original, and completely different. I'm not comparing her music to Madonna or anything, but you've gotta admit, that for my generation, we haven't seen an act so fresh and out there since Madonna! Second, yes, she's crazy when it comes to some of the things she says and her attire, but I think without those, she wouldn't be so unique. Some of the lyrics, I will admit, are awful, but hey, you gotta give something to make it big in pop, and pop lyrics are usually the most compromised. Last, but certainly not least, I truly think she's got an amazing voice. The acoustic sets and some of her less mainstream music really show that. Thus, I leave you all (for the weekend) with a clip of my favorite Gaga song to date:

No Floods - Lady Gaga

Enjoy your weekends!

What Every Townie Kid Dreams Of

I am pretty set in my ways. I like getting up at the same time everyday, having my morning cup of coffee, eating Cheerios and reading/blogging before I start the day. Sometimes, I think I just need to loosen up and take things one at a time, but I usually end up forgetting something and panicking about it. And then, out comes the planner again. The compulsive planning zone is so nice and comfortable and allows me to be organized enough to enjoy things like Zumba and ballet, whereas otherwise, I would probably fall apart.

Point being, last night I found myself done with all the things I'd planned to do, and with free time. My compulsive planning paid off! It was magical! I listened to music for a while, watched the new episode of Gossip Girl, and felt ready for a new day! I've got another song to share with you guys. Seriously, I've been obsessed with this song for the last two weeks. It's just so pretty and meaningful, and above all, really soothing. Lately, I've been into soothing music, so suggestions are totally welcome.

Coffee & Cigarettes (Acoustic) - Jimmy Eat World

I Am Thinking It's A Sign

I spent my day yesterday working and studying a lot, so I felt like relaxing a little at night and reading a bit for fun. One of my favorite songs is "Such Great Heights," by The Postal Service, but rather than the original, for calm-time and reading, I prefer the Iron and Wine cover.

Seriously, you guys, check it out.

And while I was on my calmness kick, I discovered this awesome reading playlist on Infiniti Tracks which made my night. Perfect moment of peace to end a busy day and begin a busy week.

Associations

My iTunes shuffled to "Stacy's Mom" - Fountains of Wayne last night. I make really strong memory associations to certain songs (like that one), which got me thinking about which other songs I have strong associations with. I chose a select few to collage together. Little pieces of me:

Diamonds from Sierra Leone Remix ft. Jay-Z - Kanye West: Takes me straight to a small room of the A-building of my high school where my debate coach once lectured us on how we could use panopticism to frame power struggle.
Dark Blue - Jack's Mannequin: Sitting on the concrete by the fence of the track waiting for my mother to pick me up and staring at the sky.
Stacy's Mom - Fountains of Wayne: A huge cabin in Prescott in 8th grade where three boys acted out the song on blow-up guitars.
Konstantine - Something Corporate: Two memories of this one. First: driving down an Arizona freeway at night during a looming thunderstorm. Second: Standing in the back of a huge crowd at Anaheim stadium bawling my eyes out watching it performed for the first time.
Ishq Kamina - Shakti: Sitting on the middle school track during some sports showcase thing, claiming it was my favorite song.
Oops! I Did It Again - Britney Spears: Chillin in a friend-I'm-no-longer-friends-with's white bedroom in 5th grade and jumping on the bed.
Drops of Jupiter - Train: Sitting at lunch "observing" a friend's crush in 6th grade.
Just a few; some of which have easily become favorites.
