On Wednesdays, We Wear Pink

We don't date friends' ex-boyfriends.
You can only tie your hair in a ponytail once a week.
It's just, like, the rules of feminism.

Yesterday was the 10th anniversary of the movie Mean Girls. Naturally, I wore a little pink as it was a Wednesday. All day I had friends quoting the movie to me on various platforms and it made me feel so old. Ten years?! What the hell happened to all that time? It's weird that there are teenagers out there who have no idea about this movie. That didn't grow up with Tina Fey's classic advice, "You've got to stop calling each other sluts and whores. It just makes it okay for guys to call you sluts and whores." I wish I could say how on point this movie was about a lot of high school experiences around my time, even though not entirely accurate to my own (I somehow got lucky in a lot of ways). It's one of my favorite movies ever, written by some of my favorite women and I will never forget the lessons I learned from Mean Girls. Here's to ten years, and many many more!

Mud

I saw Mud yesterday, and I was a little skeptical at first because I wasn't really sure what the premise was going to be so I was trying to keep my expectations low. Holy crap, it was amazing.

I feel like Matthew McConaughey gets typecast as the hot dude in chick flicks, but this is another movie that proves he's a much better actor than that (I'd also recommend U-571 and Angels in the Outfield). And then the two boys, Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland, were twice as good maybe. They complemented each other perfectly. Honestly, I think Tye Sheridan could get an Oscar nod.

Other than the actors, the filmography and location were beautiful. Tons of shots of the river at all times of the day and night, oh man, take me there. The story was brilliant. Without giving too much away, I thought it was great that even though romances were the main basis for the plot, it never felt cliche or like a chick flick. Also, I love how Ellis's (Tye Sheridan) motivations change throughout the movie based on his perceptions of love and the relationships of the people around him. It's very heartfelt and I walked out feeling a big jumble of nostalgic for that age and desirous of some adventure...so then we went and had lemonade and giant slices of cheesecake.

Never Let Me Go

First off, I want to say a huge thanks to all of you who checked out Project RISHI and liked it on Facebook. Honestly, I wasn't expecting such a flood of response, but I am so incredibly grateful to each and every one of you.

I watched this movie the other night on a whim. I didn't know it was based on a book, actually, but I might give this book a shot, because the movie adaptation was absolutely stunning. Funnily enough, it fell right in with my dystopia thing, which I didn't know going into it! The story is a romantic drama set to the background of ethical complications in an alternately developed (maybe not totally dystopian) society. One of the things I loved about this movie was the incredible subtlety with which the relationships were handled. I have a hard time with romcoms because as fun as they are, it never feels like there's any depth to the relationships. In this one, it's really a nod to the talent of the actors (Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, and Keira Knightley) that I could feel every little emotion the characters went through. The premise was new to me, but well thought out and executed. There's a bit of a twist at the end that's not entirely unpredictable, but emotional all the same. Overall, I would highly recommend this movie!
