Truth?

My blogging seems to peak when I have large assignments due. Just a note.

Anyway, in MMW (Making of the Modern World) today, we learned about the Scientific Revolution and the turn of intellectuals from religion to science as the source of knowledge. Many intellectuals and philosophers thought that science provided a systematic and methodical way to verify facts about the world around us. Now, granted, I've probably learned about this topic at least 5 times in various history classes, but somehow, today, it reverted my thoughts to a certain nagging thought I have recently been having: How do we know what truth is? Yes, the scientific method is something that I firmly believe in and yes, it has a way of affirming things in a very sensible manner, but it still doesn't explain what the truth is. Truth seems to be this asymptote on the learning curve that is impossible to reach. We can get mathematically and empirically very close to it (i.e. as evidence in favor of a "truth" compiles, we get closer to the verification of this "truth"), but there is really no way to know that this is truth. It is just extremely verifiable theory, right? I mean, if extremely verifiable theory is going to cure cancer, then that's fine and dandy and I won't bring this up ever again, but I never thought I would find myself questioning the very foundation of science. I blame it on my philosophy-major friend.
